A New Malaysian Restaurant in Coppell

Taste of Malaysia has opened at 3001 Olympus Blvd #130 in Coppell, at The Sound at Cypress Waters. The restaurant is located between an Ari’s Italian market and a Kilwin’s ice cream shop.

For Dallas-Fort Worth residents who enjoy exploring international cuisine, the restaurant adds another option to North Texas’ growing Asian restaurant scene. Malaysian cuisine is relatively uncommon compared with some other Southeast Asian cuisines, making the opening particularly notable for people looking for something different.

Malaysia sits next to Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, and its food reflects a combination of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences. That creates a cuisine built around aromatic spices, rice, noodles, grilled meats and richly flavored soups and sauces.

What Is on the Taste of Malaysia Menu?

One of the restaurant’s signature offerings is nasi lemak, Malaysia’s national dish. It features fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk with pandan leaves and is traditionally served with ingredients such as boiled egg, cucumber, and ikan bilis, or anchovies.

Taste of Malaysia offers seven varieties of nasi lemak, including vegetable curry, chicken curry, slow-cooked beef, slow-cooked chicken, fried chicken, fish and spicy shrimp. Each is served with coconut rice, peanuts, boiled egg and cucumber.

Another major Malaysian dish is laksa, a spicy noodle soup made with rice noodles or egg noodles and a broth flavored with aromatic spices, shrimp paste, and either coconut milk or tamarind.

The menu also includes fried rice, noodle dishes, satay chicken skewers, spring rolls, karipap, which is a samosa-style pastry filled with potatoes and vegetables, and a chicken “kutlet,” described as a breaded minced-chicken patty with a crunchy crust.

Halal Malaysian Food in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area

Another notable feature is that all of the restaurant’s meat is halal. According to the article, Taste of Malaysia is responding to demand for authentic Asian food while also offering halal-certified meat.

The restaurant’s owners, Shiva Nair and his wife, Vsruti “Vish” Nair, saw an opportunity because there are many Malaysians living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area but relatively few Malaysian restaurants.

Shiva Nair also brings more than 20 years of hospitality experience, including managing hotels and operating other restaurants.

Taste of Malaysia Lunch Buffet

For people who have never tried Malaysian cuisine, the restaurant has another way to make the menu more approachable: a lunchtime buffet.

The buffet is offered only during lunch and features 15 to 20 dishes. According to CultureMap Dallas, the selection includes chicken, shrimp, fish, vegetarian, and vegan options.

The buffet costs $18 on weekdays and $20 on weekends.

From my perspective, the buffet is one of the more interesting parts of this opening because Malaysian cuisine may be unfamiliar to many North Texas diners. Being able to sample multiple dishes in one visit could make it easier for someone to discover what they like instead of ordering a single unfamiliar dish.

Why This Coppell Restaurant Opening Is Worth Watching

Coppell and the Cypress Waters area continue to add dining options, and Taste of Malaysia gives the local restaurant scene a cuisine that is less common in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

The opening also reflects the diversity of the North Texas population and the growing demand for international food. For people searching for Malaysian food in Coppell, Malaysian restaurants near Dallas, halal Asian food in DFW, or new restaurants at The Sound at Cypress Waters, Taste of Malaysia is now another local option to consider.

As a Dallas-area Realtor, I also pay attention to restaurant openings and other local business developments because they contribute to the character and convenience of communities across North Texas. New dining and retail options can make an area more attractive to residents and add another layer to the lifestyle that comes with living in a particular neighborhood.

My Take

I think Taste of Malaysia is an interesting addition to the Coppell and Dallas-Fort Worth restaurant scene because it brings a cuisine that is still relatively rare in the area.

The combination of Malaysian dishes, halal meat, and a substantial lunch buffet gives the restaurant several ways to appeal to both people familiar with Malaysian cuisine and diners trying it for the first time. The location at The Sound at Cypress Waters also puts it in a growing North Texas destination with other restaurants and businesses nearby.

If you have never tried Malaysian food, nasi lemak or laksa would be two of the dishes I would be most curious to try.
