Smoking Tiger Makes Its DFW Debut in Carrollton

Carrollton has added another interesting destination to its growing coffee and food scene.

Smoking Tiger, a Southern California bakery-cafe known for Korean-inspired pastries, breads, coffee and creative beverages, made its Texas debut in June with the opening of The Smoking Tiger Bread Factory at The Great Oasis plaza, located at 2225 Old Denton Road, Suite 100, in Carrollton.

For DFW residents who enjoy specialty coffee, matcha, Korean pastries and unique cafe concepts, this is one worth knowing about.

What makes the Carrollton opening particularly notable is that it is Smoking Tiger’s first location in the DFW area.

The company was founded in 2020 in Buena Vista, California, and operates both coffee shops and bakeries. According to the report, the Carrollton location is one of its most expansive concepts, combining coffee, pastries, breads and sandwiches under one roof.

What Is on Smoking Tiger’s Menu?

One of the biggest draws at Smoking Tiger is its creative beverage menu.

The cafe’s signature drink is the Tiger Latte, which combines brown sugar, caramel and frothed oat milk. Another standout is the Smokin Spaniard, a latte made with espresso, condensed milk, hazelnut and cinnamon.

The menu also incorporates flavors associated with Korean beverages and ingredients.

Customers can find options such as:

  • Banana milk latte
  • Honey bori latte with barley milk and salted honey cold foam
  • Sweet corn latte with sweet corn milk and corn cold foam
  • Chai latte
  • Misugaru, a roasted rice latte
  • Strawberry matcha latte
  • Jeju matcha latte
  • Hojicha latte

Latte prices average around $6.50, according to the article.

For something outside the traditional latte category, Smoking Tiger also offers drinks such as the Pineapple Express, made with jasmine tea and pineapple concentrate, and YSL, a yuzu sparkling lemonade made with yuzu syrup, sparkling water, and lemon.

Korean Bakery Items and Creative Food

The food menu is just as distinctive.

Three of the signature bakery items highlighted in the report are the Cream Cheese Garlic Bread, Original Salt Bread, and Kimchi Musubi Croissant.

The Cream Cheese Garlic Bread is a large round roll filled with garlic and cream cheese. The Original Salt Bread is described as something of a cross between a roll and an everything bagel.

Then there is the Kimchi Musubi Croissant, which combines a croissant with Spam, kimchi, and seaweed baked onto the top.

Smoking Tiger also offers “sconkies,” which combine the characteristics of a scone and a cookie. Flavors mentioned in the article include Oreo and lemon Earl Grey.

The Carrollton location also has a Texas-only breakfast sandwich menu, including a slider with scrambled egg, cheese, and habanero aioli served on grilled King’s Hawaiian rolls.

A Korean-Inspired Cafe Experience in Carrollton

Smoking Tiger is not simply positioning itself as another coffee shop.

According to marketing director Andy Lee, the concept is inspired by cafes in South Korea that combine bread and coffee. The goal is to create a space where customers can experience modern Korean culture in an approachable way.

That concept also carries into the Carrollton location’s design.

The cafe features vertical mahogany wood panels, a design element often seen in cafes in South Korea and in traditional Korean homes known as hanoks.

That combination of Korean-inspired food, beverages and design gives Smoking Tiger a distinct identity within Carrollton’s coffee and restaurant scene.

What Smoking Tiger’s Carrollton Opening Means for DFW

From my perspective, Smoking Tiger is an interesting addition to Carrollton’s food and beverage scene because it is not simply another coffee shop offering the usual lineup of drinks and pastries.

The menu gives customers a chance to try Korean-inspired flavors in familiar formats, while also offering traditional Korean-influenced beverages such as misugaru and more unexpected options like sweet corn latte and honey bori latte.

Carrollton already has a strong food culture, and concepts like this add more variety to what is available locally.

The bigger story may be what happens next.

Smoking Tiger says the Carrollton location will not be its only location in the DFW area. However, the company has not announced additional locations or a timetable for future openings, so I would not speculate about where or when the next location will arrive.

For now, The Smoking Tiger Bread Factory in Carrollton is the brand’s first DFW location.

My Take

I think Smoking Tiger is a welcome addition to the Carrollton food scene.

The combination of Korean bakery items, specialty coffee, matcha and creative drinks gives it a clear identity instead of trying to compete as another generic coffee shop.

Personally, the Kimchi Musubi Croissant and Tiger Latte are the two items that immediately stand out to me. The menu is different enough that I’d be curious to see which items become the favorites among Carrollton and DFW customers.
