A new dining destination has arrived in the Dallas Arts District, adding another layer to the rapidly growing restaurant scene in Downtown Dallas.

A restaurant called Astra Kitchen + Lounge has officially opened inside the HALL Arts Hotel at 1717 Leonard Street. The concept replaces the former restaurant Ellie’s, which operated in the hotel for several years.

According to CultureMap Dallas, Astra opened on March 4 and introduces a redesigned space that reflects a celestial theme inspired by its name.

One of the most notable features of the restaurant is a large-scale art installation created by New York artist Spencer Finch. The installation consists of 360 suspended bulbs arranged to represent the molecular structure of an asteroid, creating an immersive visual centerpiece inside the dining room.

The restaurant’s culinary program is led by Executive Chef Miguel Antonio, a chef with experience at several well-known Dallas restaurants, including Fearing’s and Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck. He most recently led the kitchen at JW Steakhouse inside the JW Marriott Dallas.

At Astra Kitchen + Lounge, the menu centers around classic Americana cuisine with a mix of traditional and modern dishes. Menu highlights include roasted prime rib, multiple Wellington options, including a vegetarian variation, and pressed sushi.

Guests can also enjoy a curated wine list and classic cocktails, including the restaurant’s version of an espresso martini. Astra operates throughout the day with breakfast, lunch, and dinner service during the week as well as weekend brunch.

From a broader perspective, openings like this are another indicator of the continued growth and activity happening in Downtown Dallas and particularly in the Dallas Arts District.

New restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues often follow population growth and increased demand for walkable urban neighborhoods. As more businesses invest in the area, it can contribute to increased activity, tourism, and long-term development momentum.

For people following Dallas real estate and urban development, restaurant openings can sometimes act as small signals of a neighborhood’s trajectory.

The Dallas Arts District has already established itself as one of the largest arts districts in the United States, and continued hospitality investment helps strengthen its position as both a cultural and lifestyle destination.

For homeowners, buyers, and people considering moving to Dallas, these kinds of developments can be part of the bigger picture when evaluating neighborhoods and long-term growth trends in the city.
