How U.S. News Ranks America’s Best High Schools

U.S. News evaluates approximately 27,000 public high schools for its annual rankings.

The methodology considers six primary factors:

  • College readiness
  • College curriculum breadth
  • State assessment proficiency
  • State assessment performance
  • Underserved student performance
  • Graduation rates

According to U.S. News, the highest-ranking schools demonstrate strong student outcomes in areas including mathematics, reading and science assessments, college-level examinations, and graduation.

That context is important because these rankings are not simply based on reputation. They are built around multiple academic and student-outcome measures.

Dallas-Fort Worth Has Even More Highly Ranked Schools

The story extends beyond Dallas ISD.

Across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, several other schools ranked among the top 100 high schools in Texas.

For example, Mansfield Frontier High School made its U.S. News ranking debut at No. 33 nationally and No. 3 in Texas.

Other highly ranked DFW schools include Trinidad Garza Early College at Mt. View in Dallas, Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute, Westlake Academy, School of Health Professions in Dallas, Uplift Education-North Hills Prep in Irving, World Languages Institute in Fort Worth, Imagine International Academy of North Texas in McKinney, Young Women’s Leadership Academy in Fort Worth, and several schools in Frisco, Coppell, Highland Park, Lovejoy, Cedar Hill and other North Texas communities.

That is significant for the broader Dallas-Fort Worth housing market, because families relocating to North Texas have a wide range of school options across different communities and school districts.

My Take as a Dallas Realtor

I think rankings like these are important, but buyers should be careful about treating a national ranking as the only measure of a good neighborhood or school.

If you’re moving to Dallas with children, school considerations can become a major part of the home-buying decision. But families should also look at the specific school attendance boundaries, the type of school, commute times, neighborhood characteristics, home prices, property taxes, and their own family’s priorities.

The bigger takeaway for me is that Dallas and the broader DFW area continue to offer families access to highly ranked schools across multiple communities.

For someone relocating to Dallas, that can create more options when deciding where to buy a home.

And this is exactly why I believe real estate decisions should start with the bigger picture. The right home is not just about the house itself. Location, schools, commute, neighborhood, future plans, and overall affordability all matter.

What This Means for Dallas Homebuyers

If you’re considering buying a home in Dallas because of schools, don’t start with the house.

Start with the location.

Identify the communities and school options that fit your priorities, then evaluate the available homes, prices, and overall cost of ownership.

The Dallas ISD high schools ranked by U.S. News are only one piece of that process, but they are useful information for families researching Dallas neighborhoods and planning a move to North Texas.

If you’re considering buying a home in Dallas County or elsewhere in DFW, I can help you evaluate the real estate side of that decision and narrow your search based on your priorities.
